Abstract: Trump 2.0 is an unsettling mixture new and old. Latin America is a region well-versed in the politics of populism and the economics of tariffs. This talk will highlight the academic literature and lessons from Latin America before applying the lens to the United States. What is populism–a fiendishly contentious topic? What are the effects of tariffs? Is there a connection between populism and tariffs? What does the future of Trump's America portend?

Speaker: Grant Burrier is a political scientist with subfield concentrations in Comparative Politics and International Relations. His research focuses on political economy, the environment, democratic institutions and populism.
